Contract Versus Internal Jobs

Today’s job market is both amazing and completely terrible. I have had the opportunity to actively job hunt just about every year due to my constant contract jobs. Making my experience of what it’s like to job hunt, and interview a very constant life situation until last year when I became an internal employee. And it’s been quite the journey.

Shared in this journey? Or has your career been built with the same company, aka the company man/women?

There are already judgments coming to mind as you may read this…. contract work, why would anyone? And then there are those of you out there who may say to  your self, I KNEW there was others out there like me, constantly in this perpetual state of doing contract work to gain experience in order to get a chance to work for that very company.

But here is the deal….

Both are just as wonderful and horrible. Job security? Neither have it! Benefits? You would be surprised how many companies offer horrible options to their internal employees. It’s a crazy time with certain skills getting jobs instantly. Yet the world changes so fast that these same individuals end up without jobs in just a few short years.

And the competition out there isn’t just each other anymore, that computer software that HR uses to weed out the “bad options” is just confusing, with making sure you do exactly what they want so that you can at least make it to the HR person.

Regardless, with the major shift of contract work in so many industries, I felt it was a good time to tell everyone the true difference between a contractor and an Internal employee.

Contractors:

  1. Usually much better pay (unless you’re a woman, Gender Gap exists here too)

  2. Horrible benefits

  3. FMLA…Nope

  4. Loopholes for many laws to treat you horrible

  5. You are the hired help…Literally

  6. Easy way to self promote. Want to be a director, well contract as one!

  7. No job Security

  8. Typically, just 12 month contracts

  9. People get bonus’?!

  10. Retirement isn’t based off stock but there is still some decent options out there.

  11. BONUS: Hate it? LEAVE! You can because you were never tied to this place.

Internal:

  1. They base your pay on what you also get with those bonus’ and benefits, making your base salary not typically the highest

  2. Usually OK benefits

  3. Short term Disability like FMLA can be used

  4. Loopholes usually means lawsuits for the companies so they will try to abide by the law a bit more

  5. You typically have your own sense of entitlement. You think you’re the Man or Women because your not the hired help…don’t you?

  6. Promotions happen via your managers. Hope they like you!

  7. No job security

  8. Until death do you part

  9. BONUS’!!!!!

  10. Stock options!

  11. Bonus: DISCOUNTS depending on who you work for

So, what have you learned here…JOBS SUCK!

Go work for yourself! 😋

On the side, I have always been a writer and I happen to talk a ton so GBRLIFE came into fruition along with a couple of books. I have loved every minute of GBRLIFE and I'm happy to share it with all of you. Please keep reading, commenting, following, buying, and subscribing! You make all of this possible and worth it.
