Celebrities... Please Stop Writing Open Letters
In the Age of social media, Celebrities have the ability to speak to all of their fans at any moment. Each individual who is obsessed with their celebrity hero may not only follow but devour the words out of their very fingertips. It’s so easy to fall into their large kingdoms because people oddly believe that they must know all of the secrets of life with them being on top of the world. How else could they achieve the fame they have?
I know you're probably thinking exactly what I’m trying to make a point about. Those very people are indeed celebrities, but we admire them like Gods more than humans. The fault of that is our own but unlikely to change anytime soon. This brings me to a bigger issue. Their words.
Celebrities already obtain financial benefits from each time they wear or speak names of designers or businesses for the most part but those words that they spew across social media or worse as Personal Essays that they love to call open letters it can really cause havoc. Not because their words don’t matter.
Everyone’s words matter no matter who they are. It’s the access they have to display these words across the world that becomes the issue. And celebrities like to use this access with the mentality that they are doing some good by speaking to us "little people"
Let me explain…
If I were to speak about the industry, I work in with a great concern over the way women are represented and overall treated, that would be just fine, but where could those words land? On social media for sure, but would I be able to get it immediately added to the Washington Post or some other well-known publication? That’s a quick no.
You have to work hard to even be considered by those kinds of publications…unless, of course, you are a celebrity.
Doesn’t matter if your rise to fame was acting or being a reality star. Maybe even an influencer. All that matters is that you have fans, and those fans will purchase their publication just because your words are in them. So, it goes back to being our fault. The little people, who give those words power.
We as little people really should be falling in love with the scientists, authors, teachers, and many other amazing people who have conquered this world in ways that have propelled mankind forward. Those are the words we should WANT to read.
Not about Angelina Jolie being upset about Brad Pitt working with Harvey Weinstein. Her feelings over the situation are valid but as an open letter…I wish I could have heard from someone who the world needs to hear from right now.
*While many could say their words are just as important so they should post them, I do agree and disagree. They are important and I hope everyone who wants to speak about anything they want does so. I just wish it wasn't automatic into major publications and published everywhere as “facts” out of their mouths just because they are a celebrity.*
Who would you have liked to have heard from?
